This movie is an action adventure story taking place in the Mohave desert where the animals dress in western cowboy attire and live a wild west lifestyle. Rango is based on an original idea by "Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski. In it, Johnny Depp stars as a Hawaiian-shirt clad chameleon with an identity crisis. Rango is an oddly charismatic household pet that goes on an adventure to discover his true self. The movie co-stars Isla Fisher, Abigail Breslin, Alfred Molina, Bill Nighy, Harry Dean Stanton, Ray Winstone, and Timothy Olyphant as The Spirit of the West. Rango (2011) is a photo-realistic CG animated movie from Nickelodeon and Paramount Studios with animation supplied by Industrial Light & Magic (ILM). THE BLU-RAY DISCby Bill Chambers Paramount brings Rango to Blu-ray in a 2.40:1, 1080p transfer that absolutely honours the film's visual sumptuousness. This is arguably the best animated movie since WALLE--certainly the best-lit, with ace DP Roger Deakins having served as a consultant to the virtual cinematographers on both. The way the image mimics the lens refracting sunlight in an early shot of the mariachi owls is impressive, the reproduction of that effect by this presentation equally so. Dynamic range is awesome, starting at the most pitch blacks and going 'til whites blow out, and there's no banding in any of the steeper gradations from dark to light. Colours are lush and multifaceted--Rango himself exhausts just about every shade of green in his attempts to blend, all of them duplicated with fidelity here. And to say that fine detail is glassy and tactile is an understatement, though that can be a double-edged sword with some of the grotesque creatures on display. Matching the video pound-for-pound is a 5.1 DTS-HD MA track that ably supports an aggressively discrete mix, one that operates in the CinemaScope mode of placing voices directionally but not so slavishly that dialogue is constantly ping-ponging around the room. Bass is deep; when those prairie dogs tunnel up by the hundreds, the rumble feels like a launch at Cape Canaveral. Sidewall imaging, as when the hawk swoops across the soundstage (there are vocal instances as well), is astonishingly transparent.

Dee Jay has a large, muscular physique. He wears orange loose drawstring pants with black sides and yellowish-white lettering that reads "MAXIMUM" and orange sparring gloves. His hairstyle is a braided mohawk, with a letter "M" cut on each side of his head; these letters were absent from his appearance in the Street Fighter IV series. Dee Jay is also seen in the anime movie and some artwork with a Caribbean chain necklace.
Here at CNET we've used Black Hawk Down as a touchstone in our audio testing labs for many years, and so we were excited by the prospect of a 4K/Dolby Atmos version. And you know what? It's everything we could have hoped for. Sure it's still a grainy-looking movie, but the picture has been elevated in many ways including the addition of some subtle HDR effects. But the most impressive thing is the sound mix -- this film proves why Dolby Atmos should be renamed the "helicopter effect channel". The sounds of Somalian markets surround you as Black Hawks full of rangers swoop overhead. This disc is a new reference.
Forget everything you know about sequels made 30 years after the original. Blade Runner 2049 is the rare update that actually improves the first film. Beautifully shot, this piece of art is made to be shown on a 4K UHD TV. Of all the films in this list, if you're a sci-fi fan at all, this is the disc you absolutely must buy first. You'll need a beefy home theater or a good pair of headphones for this movie -- because you're going to want to play it loud.
The poster child for what 4K movies are capable of, The Revenant is one of the most beautifully shot movies we've ever seen. The picture quality is flawless and both the expanded color palette and dynamic range pop. Put it on the biggest screen you can afford and turn the volume up!
A beautifully crafted movie in terms of visuals and story, Wonder Woman is the superhero movie we had to have on this list. Special effects are used subtly, at least until the end of the movie, while HDR gives scenes like Steve Trevor's interrogation with the Lasso of Truth a real boost. Yes, some of the scenes do suffer from film grain -- including, strangely, the opening CGI sequence -- but overall, this is one origin tale you need in your collection.
